Chapter 6

Learning Intentions

•I understand the story and can use the information to imagine what the characters are thinking and feeling beyond what is written.

•I can imagine what the characters' hopes and fears are based on what I have read.

Questions

How is Olemaun feeling now? She says, "And I only had to remember how to be Olemaun Pokiak, an Inuvialuit girl."  What does she mean by that? Why is that important?

Why do you think Olemaun thinks so much about the Dubilak? What do they have in common?

When the outsider's boat came to collect the children, Agnes disappeared. She faced great danger out in the tundra alone. Did she make the right decision? Explain.

Interesting fact: Dubilak comes from a traditional word for a terrible spirit that brings misfortune. A variation of the name "tupilak" is widely recognized amongst distant Inuit groups.

    3. Do we know where Dubilak came from or are you inferring from the book that he went to residential school as well?

  2. Agnes made the right decision to go hide. Because if she went back to school they will make her speak English and when she gets back from school she is going to speak English and her mom is going to get mad at her. Because her mom does not want her to speak English, Agnes’s mom wants her speak her own language.

  3. 1. Maybe by she can’t really remember herself as an Inuvialuit girl anymore and just thinks of herself as an outsider girl.
    2. I think that she talks about him so much because she wants to know more about him and be his friend, they have in common that they both seem lonely and sad.
    3. I think that she did make the right decision about running away because she would have to have gone to the school if she had stayed with her mom at their house

    1. I agree that Olemaun and Dubilak are lonely and sad, but why do you think he is so lonely and sad? Similar experiences?

  6. 1. It means, that you need to know, that you’re yourself. And you can stand up for anything and believe in anything. So Olemaun decided to use her power to stick up for herself.
    2. I think she thinks about him a lot, is because she thinks he doesn’t look scary and mean-unlike others- and she thinks he might be looking for his friends or family, and possibly just trying to reunite. But one thing they have in common though, is that they are both kind of lonely.
But in my decision, I think Agnes made the right choice. When her mother is in the hospital, she usually goes to the school. So I guess Agnes is sick of going to the school, so she decided to run away or something, until her mother gets back.

  8. 1. I think Olemaun is feeling happy because she wants to remember herself and she is happy to see her parents because she never seen her parents for a long time for like two or three years and wants to be 2.part of the Inuvialuit girl now.2.I think Olemaun thinks about the dublak because she wants to give the book to him and then Agnes caught her have the book and she wants to read it but the dark stranger left before Agnes gets to return it to him.3. Agnes made the right decision because Agnes didn’t want to back to school because she wants to stay with Olemaun and she ran off to the tundra alone because she never want to go back to the school and it took her three days and she did make right decision because she said she doesn’t want to go back to the school and to stay with her parent

  14. 1.Olemaun does not want to remember her Christian life because she did not like residential school the only thing she liked about it was her best friend Agnes and learning to read.
2.Olemaun does not like where she is she wishes she still lived in Banks Island because that where most of her friends live there and that makes her sad because she won’t be able to see her friends forever.
    3. Olemaun is starting to feel bad because she still feels like an outsider whenever she tries to play with her best friend Agnes her mother won’t let her play with her or hunt with her when she tries to play with others the always tell her to leave because she went to residential school so they are starting to leave her out.

  15. 1. I think she is feeling happy because she might have an idea to help dubilak. I think she means that all she had to do is remember Olemaun pokiak to change her. I think it is important because if she tells dubilak to remember his old self to change him it could let the other persons that are scared of him like him that’s why I think it is important

  18. 1. P.1) Olemaun is feeling sad now because she didn’t get to see her friend in a long time plus Angus wouldn’t play with Olemaun for a while p.2) She ment by she needed to try and remember herself not Margret p.3) it is important because if she doesn’t know her self she can’t make friends or play with Angus and speak with her mother and family.
    2. P.1) Olemaun thinks of Dubilak because she thinks that he is an outsider and he is lonely p.2) I think they have stuff in common like they act as outsiders, they feel like they don’t have a home and they feel lonely.
    3. She didn’t make the right decision because she could have frozen to death or something worse because I know that there is polar bears out in the arctic so “you know what I mean” she may have been killed by a polar bear.

  19. 3. Yes I think she made the right decision because if she went back to residential school she would have to talk English when her mom doesn't want her to speak or listen to English.
