Chapter 4

Learning Intention
  • I understand the story and can use the information to  imagine what the characters are thinking and feeling beyond what is written.
  • I can imagine what the character's hopes and fears are based on what I 've read.

  1. "My tears fell in the ocean, and I wished my spirit was in those tears, because then I could follow the current back to a place where I belonged." Where does Olemaun  belong? What would belonging look like and feel for her?
  2. Why do you think Olemaun is not as afraid of Dubilak as everyone else is? What does she think of him? What does he represent to her?

  1. 1.She belongs with the Inuvialuktun people and with her family and I think belonging would feel really good to her and she wouldn’t feel so out of place.

  2. 1. olemaun cannot decide but at the same time she want to be an outsider and go back to banks island she want her spirit to wash away though her tears she wants that to happen because she feels like she doesn’t belong anywhere besides the outsiders world and mostly every day she feels sad she can’t walk around with her best friend her mother does not understand her the only person that understand her is her father and that is one of the only person that she missed the most.

    2. she might not be afraid of dubilak because she understands him she know why he stays around because he has no one in his life and he’s home sick that’s why she is not afraid of him everyone else is afraid of him because they think is the devil and don’t understand him and he feels bad because he feels like her doesn’t belong anywhere so he just wants to stay in town with other people so he wont be alone but still no one talks to him.

  4. 1. I think Olemaun wants to return to where she belongs which is Banks Island and a little bit of the school because she wants to be by the people who are like her, but she wants to be home with her family and friends. Belonging looks like you have friends or family and feels like your comfy and at home.

  5. 2. I think Olemaun isn’t afraid of Dubilak because she knows how he feels because she said she recognized he was homesick and she connects what he’s feeling and less afraid of him anymore. He’s a lonely outsider like he was and he tried to smile at her so he doesn’t hate her.

  6. Olemaun belongs at Banks Island where she was born. Olemaun feels really sad that she is not on the island she was born. Olemaun is not afraid of the Dubilak because she has seen the nuns at the school. She thinks that he is only a lonely outsider like how she feels. She thinks of him like she feels everyone else sees her, a lonely outsider.

  9. 1. I think Olemaun feels sad because she is an outsider.
She does not belong in Tuktoyaktuk.
Belonging feels like happy, belonging look like in a group.
    2. Olemaun not afraid of Dubilak because they are sad. She see in Dubilak a friend. Dubilak represent a friend.

  10. 1. P.1)Olemaun thinks that she belongs in residential school instead of Tuk p.2) She thinks that she felt belonging to her friends and family but Agnes’s mother won’t let her play with Olemaun so she doesn’t feel much belonging and she feels like the stranger.
    2. Olemaun is not afraid of Dubilak because she was afraid of the nuns (like raven) but one nun was friendly to all the kids in residential school and it was sister MC Quillen p.2)She thinks of him as a stranger instead of a devil p.3)He represents her as a stranger
