Chapter 3

Learning Intentions

I can use my background knowledge to explain the importance of key events in the story.

  1. Why is it upsetting to Olemaun when she has trouble fishing? Why is this skill important to her?
  2. Why do you think she begins to talk about herself as two different people - Olemaun and Margaret?
  3. "See? I told you, when she is hungry enough she will eat," my father said to my mother in Inuvialuktun on his way out the door to find out what was going on with dark stranger. Somehow, I understood every word. What is important about this?

  3. 1. She is upset because she used to be a good fisher and now she can’t and her younger sister can do better than her. Olemaun’s doesn’t want to disappoint her mother even more because of her talking English and burning the Bannock.
    2. I think Olemaun is talking about herself as 2 different people because Olemaun could fish, could make Bannock, and can’t read, and talk to her family. Now Margret can’t fish good, can’t make Bannock, can read, can’t talk to her parents. The only good thing is she can read. She feels like a Christen and a Inuit girl.
    3. Those words her father said are important because she is understanding her Inuit language so she is kind of getting closer to who she wants to be.

  4. She wants to show her mother that she can still fish and still have a skill.
Because Margaret was the bible side and Olemaun was the real side. When her dad said something Olemaun started remembering everything like her language and all her cultural stuff.

  6. 1. It is upsetting to her because she can’t seem to catch any fish for her to eat. Because if she forgot this skill she won’t be able to feed herself also fishing is part of her culture.
    2. She is talking about her as two different people because she can’t really eat English food or her food that her parents eat and she can’t seem to decide what side she is on. She doesn’t know who she is.
    3. Her father knew that she would be starving when they got back and I don’t know how she knew what her father was saying.

  7. 1. It is upsetting to Olemaun when she has trouble fishing because her sister Elizabeth can fish better than she can. This skill is important to her because fishing is part of her culture.
    2. She talks about herself as two different people because she doesn’t know where she fits in. She isn’t sure if she is Christian or Inuvialuit. She doesn’t know who she is.
    3. This is important, because she still remembers her family language. She might be worried that she would lose it.

  8. 1. Probably because she really liked fishing and she always tried to outdo her mother but her feelings were down so she didn’t feel like trying to outdo her mother but she
didn’t feel like trying to outdo her mother.

  9. 1. This school educated but she lost her culture and can’t speak her language anymore and cannot cook her traditional food anymore and it makes her family sad because they think she is an outsider.

    2. Her mother does not like the person agnes is because she is an outsider and she wants to change that so she can have the real daughter she had before she left.

    3. She is starting to feel like an outsider because she won’t eat their food she would rather eat outsider foods and she can’t talk to some of her friends because she can’t speak her language or understand it any more or the kids she went to school with wont talk to her because their parents won’t let them speak English and she is starting feel left out.

  10. 1 It was upsetting to Olemaun when she couldn’t fish because she wanted to make her mom praud.
2 I think she begins to talk about herself as two different people Olemaun and Margaret because as a good Christian she would pray before meals and as Olemaun , she and parents would not do so.
3 What is important about this is that when she ate muktuk she understood them.

  11. Olemaun wanted to show her mother that she could remember fishing skills after being in school for two year straight. Her little sister caught bigger a fish then Olemaun, and she was giggling about it. This made Olemaun feel sad and jealous, because her fish wasn’t as big.

  12. I think that it is upsetting to Olemaun because her sister got a fish and she did not get one and I think that she might be a little jealous that her mom is happy for her little sister.
She begins to talk she might think that Margret is the outsider and olemaun is just like her family and like her culture.
He means by when she gets hungry enough she will eat, she ate it because she knew that it was not that bad to eat.

  13. I like Olemaun way better than Margret because Margret is just the girl one got a name from a nun is residential school and Olemaun is an Inuit girl with her family and more respect.
